Situational questions

A situational question presents a hypothetical scenario and asks what a candidate would do about it. It's forward-looking, testing judgment on a problem the candidate may never have actually faced, unlike a behavioral question, which asks about something that already happened.

The classic opening is "what would you do if," not "tell me about a time."

Definition

Situational questions — A situational question describes a scenario, often specific to the role being hired for, and asks the candidate to walk through how they would handle it. It's judged on the reasoning, not a single correct answer: whether the candidate weighs tradeoffs, considers the people affected, and lands on a defensible course of action.

These questions are common for entry-level and career-change candidates who don't yet have a matching past example to draw on for a behavioral question. They also let an interviewer test a specific, narrow scenario relevant to the actual job, like how a candidate would prioritize two conflicting deadlines from different managers, without needing the candidate to have lived through that exact situation already.

A strong answer states an assumption, works through the reasoning out loud, and lands on a decision rather than listing every option without picking one.

Frequently asked questions

How is a situational question different from a behavioral one?

A situational question is hypothetical and forward-looking, asking what a candidate would do. A behavioral question asks about something that actually happened, in the past tense.

Is there a right answer to a situational question?

Rarely one single right answer. Interviewers are usually grading the reasoning process, the tradeoffs considered, and whether the final decision is defensible, more than the specific choice made.

Why do interviewers use situational questions for entry-level candidates?

Entry-level candidates often don't have a matching real experience to answer a behavioral question about. A hypothetical scenario lets an interviewer test judgment without requiring years of prior work history.
