What it is
This is one of Intervieux's seven interview types, and the only one built around negotiation rather than evaluation. It runs in two modes: a new-offer mode, for the conversation that happens after a job offer lands and before it's accepted, and an internal-raise mode, for the conversation an employee has with a manager about their current compensation.
Like Intervieux's other six interview types, salary negotiation runs on its own dedicated conversational voice agent, and within that agent the AI on the other end of the call responds and pushes back the way a hiring manager or a manager handling a raise request actually would, rather than folding immediately.
How it works
- 1
Pick a mode
Choose new-offer mode to practice negotiating a job offer, or internal-raise mode to practice asking a current employer for more.
- 2
Choose style and personality
Set the tone of the other side of the conversation with one of three interview styles and twelve interviewer personalities.
- 3
State a position out loud
The session starts with the candidate stating what they're asking for, a number, a benefit, a title, out loud rather than typing it.
- 4
Hold the conversation through pushback
The AI responds the way the other side of a real negotiation would, with questions, hesitation, or a counter, and the candidate has to keep the conversation moving.
- 5
Review the report
The session ends with a scored report and written reasoning on how the negotiation actually went.
Two different real conversations, one feature
Negotiating a brand new offer and asking a current manager for a raise are not the same conversation, the negotiating position is different, the relationship is different, and what's reasonable to ask for is different. The new-offer and internal-raise modes are built as separate scenarios rather than one generic negotiation script applied to both.
Not an interview for a job
Every other Intervieux interview type is either practice for being evaluated or, in the case of job-board screening, an evaluation that's actually happening. Salary negotiation is neither. Nobody is deciding whether to hire the candidate during this session, the AI is just holding the other side of a compensation conversation.
Practice for a conversation most people avoid rehearsing
Asking for more money out loud is a skill most candidates get almost no practice at before they need it for real. This feature exists specifically because that particular conversation, unlike a standard interview question, rarely gets rehearsed anywhere else.
Ending the conversation well counts, and the reasoning is written out
Intervieux's penalty system deducts points for an interview that ends abruptly, and that deduction applies here too. A negotiation that trails off without landing on a next step, a number restated, a timeline for a decision, an agreement to follow up, scores worse than one that closes the conversation deliberately, which mirrors how a real negotiation is judged as much by how it wraps up as by what was asked for.
The report that follows explains, in written reasoning rather than a bare number, what specifically held up in the conversation and where the ask, the pushback, or the close could have gone better.
Who it's for
Who it's for
New-offer mode suits a candidate who has an offer in hand and wants to practice countering it before responding for real. Internal-raise mode suits someone who already has a job and wants to rehearse the conversation with their own manager before asking for a raise, without waiting for the real conversation to be the first time the ask is said out loud.
Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between the two salary negotiation modes?
New-offer mode practices negotiating a job offer that's just been made. Internal-raise mode practices asking a current employer for a raise. They're built as separate scenarios since the position and relationship involved in each are different.
Does the AI actually push back during salary negotiation practice?
Yes. The AI on the other side of the conversation responds and pushes back the way a real hiring manager or manager would, rather than agreeing to whatever number is stated first.
Is salary negotiation practice scored the same way as a job interview?
It ends with a scored report and written reasoning, the same reporting format used across Intervieux's interview types, though the conversation itself is a negotiation rather than a hiring evaluation.
Can I practice salary negotiation without having a real offer yet?
Yes. Both modes can be used ahead of a real conversation, whether an offer is already in hand or a raise request hasn't been made yet.
